September Happenings in Lucca
MURABILIA
My favorite event of the year arrives this weekend in Lucca; Murabila. The sprawling art and garden show held literally ON the famous Lucca wall, has something for everyone. Of course plants are the stars, but there are cheeses, artwork, soaps, salumi and gelato, artigianal beers, handcrafts, spices, and of course exhibitions of apples, grapes and more. One, two or three day passes are available. Located near Porta Elisa, entrances are there and adjacent to the Botanical Gardens.
MUSEO DELLA FOLLIA
Recently we made time to see Museo della Follia. A temporary exhibit, artfully chronicling the state run mental institutions in Italy before their reform in the 70's. Its provocative and thought provoking.

Located near the tourist office at the end of via San Paolino.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHT
Lastly, the spectacular luminara festival of Lucca takes place in the late afternoon to evening of September 13th. If you have never experienced this event, go! The city will be lit with tens of thousands of candles, incandescent lighting all over town will be dimmed to allow the full effect of this romantic and important evening.
